Between Two Skies I began with a piece of natural lapis lazuli that refused to have a back.

On one face, washes of cobalt, denim, and pale mineral blue drift through the stone in broad, cloudlike formations. Small traces of golden pyrite appear here and there, catching the light against a surface that feels almost atmospheric.

Turn the pendant over and its character changes completely. Deeper blues, charcoal-dark passages, and a far more generous scattering of pyrite create something richer and more nocturnal, a stone dusted with its own tiny constellation of gold.

Rather than choose which face deserved to be seen, I designed the necklace so that both could be.

A sterling silver bail allows the teardrop-shaped lapis pendant to turn naturally on an 18-inch sterling silver chain, finished with a sterling silver lobster clasp. Wear the lighter face when you want blue upon blue, or turn it to reveal the darker, pyrite-rich side.

There is no back. Only another view.
