Opal: The Stone That Captures Light

Few gemstones inspire wonder quite like opal.

While most gemstones sparkle by reflecting light, precious opal seems to create it from within. With every movement, flashes of electric blue, emerald green, fiery orange, crimson, violet, and gold ripple beneath its surface, making each stone appear alive with color.

For thousands of years, this remarkable display has inspired myths, legends, and admiration across cultures. Ancient Romans believed opals contained the beauty of every gemstone combined, while later generations prized them as symbols of hope, creativity, and good fortune.

As enchanting as these stories are, the science behind opal is equally extraordinary.


Nature's Optical Illusion

Unlike diamonds, sapphires, or quartz, opal is not a crystal.

Instead, it forms when silica-rich water slowly seeps into cracks and cavities within rock. As the water gradually evaporates over immense spans of time, it leaves behind countless microscopic spheres of silica packed together in astonishingly orderly arrangements.

When light enters the stone, it bends and scatters through these tiny spheres. Different wavelengths emerge at different angles, producing the shifting rainbow known as play-of-color.

No two natural opals arrange these silica spheres in exactly the same way. Every stone displays its own unique pattern of color, making each one a singular work of nature.



Precious Opal and Common Opal

Not every opal displays brilliant flashes of color.

Gemologists generally divide opals into two broad categories.

Precious Opal

Precious opal exhibits the spectacular play-of-color that has captivated people for centuries. Black opal, white opal, crystal opal, many fire opals, and boulder opals all belong to this remarkable family.

These are the stones most people imagine when they hear the word "opal."

Common Opal

Common opal is every bit as genuine.

It shares the same chemical composition but lacks the orderly silica sphere structure needed to produce play-of-color. Instead, it appears in beautiful shades of white, blue, pink, green, brown, or other soft colors, often with a gentle waxy or porcelain-like glow.

Though generally more affordable than precious opal, common opal has long been admired for carvings, decorative objects, and jewelry. Its beauty simply tells a different geological story.


Where Opals Are Found

Australia has long been considered the world's opal capital, producing the vast majority of precious opals discovered over the past century.

Some of its most celebrated mining regions include:

  • Lightning Ridge, famous for dramatic black opals.
  • Coober Pedy, renowned for luminous white opals.
  • Andamooka, known for crystal and matrix opals.
  • Queensland, home to magnificent boulder opals still attached to their ironstone host rock.

Beautiful opals are also found in Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Honduras, Slovakia, and several other countries, each with its own distinctive colors and characteristics.

Understanding Natural, Synthetic, and Imitation Opals

One of the joys of collecting gemstones is learning how many fascinating materials exist.

One of the challenges is discovering that similar names do not always describe the same thing.

Understanding the difference helps you make informed choices and ensures you're paying for exactly what you're expecting to receive.

Natural Opal

Natural opal forms over millions of years through geological processes.

Every stone is unique, shaped entirely by nature.


Synthetic Opal

Synthetic opal is real opal, created in a laboratory rather than beneath the Earth's surface.

Its chemical composition closely matches that of natural opal, and many laboratory-grown opals are remarkably beautiful.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing a synthetic opal, provided it is honestly disclosed as such.


Doublets and Triplets

Not every opal jewelry piece contains a solid opal.

An opal doublet consists of a thin slice of genuine precious opal permanently bonded to a dark backing. The backing enhances the stone's color while allowing beautiful opal to be enjoyed more affordably.

An opal triplet adds a transparent protective cap, usually quartz or glass, over that natural opal slice. This creates additional durability while preserving the stone's vibrant appearance.

Both doublets and triplets contain genuine natural opal. They are assembled stones rather than solid opals and should always be described accordingly.


Imitation Opals

Some products resemble opal but are not opal at all.

These imitation materials are commonly made from glass, resin, or plastic and are often marketed under names such as:

  • Aurora Opal
  • Opalite
  • Galaxy Opal
  • Sea Opal
  • Resin Opal

Many are attractive decorative materials in their own right, but they should never be represented or priced as natural precious opal.


A Note About Opalite

Despite its name, commercially produced opalite is usually man-made glass rather than natural opal.

Its soft blue glow and warm amber highlights make it an appealing decorative material, but it does not display the natural play-of-color that makes precious opal unique.

The similar name understandably causes confusion, so it's always worth reading a product description carefully.


Buying with Confidence

An informed collector is a confident collector.

When purchasing opal jewelry, don't hesitate to ask whether the stone is:

  • Natural
  • Synthetic
  • Doublet
  • Triplet
  • Imitation

A reputable jeweler should always be happy to answer those questions clearly.

The goal isn't to convince you that one choice is better than another. Every material has its place. Rather, it's to ensure you understand exactly what you're purchasing so you can choose the piece that best fits your taste, budget, and collection.
